A university in India, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University(SMVDU) was established under an Act of J&K State Legislature in 1999 as fully residential and technical university. It is located on a 470-acre (1.9 Square Kilometers) campus near Katra, .Jammu and Kashmir, and is also approved by the UGC under section 2(f) and 12(B). It is located near the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.

The University began operations as an academic unit on August 19, 2004, when it was opened by the Hon’ble President of India, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. Dr. Kalam also gave the first lecture to the University’s students.

There are four colleges or faculties, each of which is led by a Dean. Each college is divided into Schools of Study, which are similar to university departments and are led by a Director. Academic decentralisation allows each institution to operate independently.

The Schools provide a variety of undergraduate, post-graduate, and doctoral degree programmes.

The university has adopted the IIT/UGC study pattern, which includes a choice-based credit system and continuous evaluation based on a 10-point scale Grade Point Average (GPA).

Hostel: Boys and girls have their own hostels.
All SMVDU hostels include Wi-Fi access, as well as a variety of other amenities such as water purifiers, a mess, power and water supplies, and catering services. Their is a bit electricity problem.

The institution features a residential system with six hostels that can accommodate all of the students on campus (Vidhyanchal, Nilgiri, Trikuta, Kailash and Basoli for men, and Shivalik and Vaishnavi for women).

International conferences, annual science days, annual engineers days, monthly panel discussions called “Mind-meet,” and open source technology meetups are all held on a regular basis.

In March 2010, the university held the Zonal NASA Convention, which drew 750 architectural students from North Indian colleges.

Students have created a unique programme called “Vikalp“, in which underprivileged youngsters from the surrounding neighbourhood are taught and trained on a regular basis. The university health care centre provides free medications to the children in this programme.
