What is web 3.0

Web 3.0 is the next iteration or phase in the evolution of the web/internet, and it has the potential to be as disruptive and paradigm-shifting as Web 2.0 was. The main concepts of Web 3.0 include decentralisation, openness, and increased user utility.

Some of these essential notions were developed upon by Berners-Lee in the 1990s, as outlined below:

  • “No permission from a central authority is required to post anything on the web,” says Decentralization. “There is no central controlling node, and hence no single point of failure…and no ‘kill switch’!” This also entails freedom from censorship and surveillance without cause.”
  • “Instead of being written and managed by a small group of experts, code was generated in plain view of everyone, enabling maximum engagement and experimentation,” says bottom-up design.

Web 3.0 has progressed well beyond Berners-original Lee’s notion of the Semantic Web, which he first proposed in 2001. This is partially due to the high cost and difficulty of converting human language—with all of its various subtleties and variations—into a format that computers can understand, and partly due to the fact that Web 2.0 has already changed significantly over the past two decades.
